An ultrasound scan is very similar to the type of imaging that is carried out during pregnancy. It works by using a harmless very high frequency sound which is not audible.
It is particularly effective in younger women who have denser breast tissue that does not show such detail on mammography. Ultrasound scans are also effective for breast diagnosis in all age groups, and many women will be advised to have a mammogram and an ultrasound scan.
The ultrasound scan is carried out by a Consultant Breast Radiologist, who specialises in breast radiology. The examination is carried out with the patient lying on her back. A small amount of warm gel on the skin to aid the transmission of the ultrasound waves, then the Consultant Radiologist will move the ultrasound probe over the skin pressing gently.
