    Core Needle Biopsy

A core needle biopsy test takes a very small slither of tissue. Because the tissue is intact as opposed to individual cells, more information is derived from this test as the architecture of the breast tissue can be examined microscopically.

    Digital Mammogram

Mammograms are low dose x-rays of the breast. They are generally only carried out in women over the age of 35 years, and women over 40 can self refer for an annual check up.

    Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC)

This type of breast biopsy uses a very fine needle of a similar size or thinner than that used for taking blood.

    Magnetic Resonance Imaging

An MRI uses a very strong magnetic field to build up a three dimensional picture of the breasts.

    Ultrasound

An ultrasound scan is very similar to the type of imaging that is carried out during pregnancy. It works by using a harmless very high frequency sound which is not audible.

Final consultation

Following the completion of any of the above investigations you will have a further consultation with the Consultant. The results of all tests will be explained to you. It is usually possible to make a definite diagnosis by the end of the clinic visit. Any conditions will be carefully explained to you and any treatments that may be required can be advised and if appropriate started straight away.

The majority of breast problems are not serious and not related to breast cancer in any way. The majority of patients attending the Harley Street Breast Clinic will have their breast problem dealt with in one visit and will not require further appointments.

A full summary of your breast problem, the investigations and final diagnosis will be sent to your local Doctor or GP. We are very happy to send a copy of any letters to you if you feel that this would be useful.
