Removal of cancerous tumours in the breast

Surgical removal of the cancerous tumour in the breast improves survival in patients with spread to other organs – Although many patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer have early stage disease with only a cancerous lump in their breast and no sign of spread elsewhere, some patients are found to have spread to other organs such as the bones, lungs and liver.

Axillary lymph nodes

No need for removal of all axillary lymph nodes for some patients with a positive sentinel node biopsy – Over the past ten years fewer and fewer patients with breast cancer have needed to have all of their lymph nodes removed from under the arm. This has been a very positive step forward because this type of surgery can cause permanent fluid retention in the arm (lymphoedema).

Secondary breast cancer spread to the lungs represents a serious progression of the disease. It is categorised as stage 4 breast cancer. The usual treatment is with chemotherapy which usually produces significant and sometimes dramatic regression of the cancer in the lungs.
